What to Know Before You Show

Things to bring that you didn't think of:

Ok, you're smart enough to pack ski goggles and a warm sweater, but here's a couple other things to bring:

bullet

slippers -- yes, slippers.  Due to the snow (and water, dirt, & mud that seems to travel with it), we ask guests to remove their outdoor shoes when inside the building.  If you bring a pair of slippers or house-shoes, you'll probably get a lot of use out of them.

bullet

Sunscreen -- we get a lot of sunshine here and there's not a lot of extra air to dilute it.  Bring it and use it.

bullet

Camera -- Alright, you probably thought of that, but it would be a shame to forget it...

bullet

Laptop -- Actually, if it's your vacation we encourage you to leave it at home, but if you can't live without it, we have free high-speed wireless internet throughout our building.

bullet

Finally, if it's summer time, you can skip the ski goggles, but everything else applies, plus bring a jacket if you plan to be out and about after dark -- even our summer time temperature will dip into the 40's at night.

Altitude-sickness:

Except for being easily winded your first few days in town, most people don't get it too bad , but since we're at 8,600 feet and the skiing is uphill from here, it can affect almost anyone.  Here's a couple things you can do to prevent it.

bullet

Booze -- take it easy on the alcohol, especially your first few days in town.

bullet

Water -- drink a lot.  Oh, and coffee doesn't help and may even hurt.

bullet

Exertion -- moderation is key, don't overdo it those first couple days.

Also, if you have the option, it's wise to sleep at an intermediate altitude before you arrive (i.e., Denver -- what we consider low altitude).

Note that altitude sickness is real and and can be severe.  If you become severely affected, the remedy is to relocate yourself to a lower altitude which is no way to spend your vacation.   Use your head and a little moderation to have a great trip.  Here's a couple links to learn more:

The Roads & Weather:

We have some of the best snow-removal operators in the United states and it takes a lot to shut down our roads ...however, we do get a lot snow, so things can get bogged down...

You can check this website for road conditions (look for Hwy 40 & Berthoud pass).  http://www.cotrip.org/

The main thing to remember is to not be in a hurry.  Weather and traffic aren't always predictable so leave a little room in your schedule for delays and you'll avoid a lot of stress.
